Set on a post-apocalyptic earth, Hunger Games are a gladiator type battle between teens that each district has to participate in, as a form of subjugation by the controlling government. Friend battles friend in this kill or be killed setting.

Katniss, a sixteen-year-old girl, steps up to the battle in place of her sister Pita. As the sole provider of food for her family, will Katniss's attempt at saving her sister only prolong her family's suffering? Peeta, a teenage boy and friend to Katniss, is a character still trying to hold onto his humanity and sympathy toward others, and it could very well cost him everything.

Why this is a Good Book For Teenage Girls

Hunger Games is a good book for teenage girls because every teen worries about growing up and being laden with responsibility. In Katniss's dystopian world she has the ultimate responsility, fight to the death or her family starves to death. Success means her family is temporarily saved, but in the same breath, the winner is also a murder. Filled with moral dilemmas and current teen issues Hunger Games is a great read for the teen who likes dystopian, nail biting fight scenes and angry teenagers.
