INT GENEALOGIST'S OFFICE - DAY

Jason walks into the office of DAVID HAMMERSTEIN, the genealogist recommended by Prof. Williams.

David H. is sitting at his desk, using his computer.

DAVID H.
(looking up from his
computer)
Hello. Can I help you.

JASON
Hi. My name's Jason. I spoke with
you on the phone.

DAVID H.
Oh Yes. Jason... Sutherland,
right? Please, come in. Sit down.

Jason sits.
DAVID H.
You said something about
researching a family crest?

JASON
Yeah. That's right. At least, I
think it's a crest. I have a
picture.

Jason hands the photograph to David H.

DAVID H.
Thank you.
(examining the photograph)
Well, it looks Germanic. Say 16-
1700's. It may take a day or two,
but I should be able to track its
origin down for you.

JASON
Right on. Thanks very much.

DAVID H.
If I can have your number I'll give
you a call as soon as I find
something out.

JASON
555-8943.

DAVID H.
Great. I'll give you a call within
a couple of days.

JASON
Thanks.

DAVID H.
Take care.

Jason leaves.

INT. INTERNET CAFE - DAY

Jason is at a payphone in the cafe where Sarah works, talking and drinking coffee.

JASON
(pause)
Hey Professor, it's me Jason.
(pause)
Hey Mr. Starne showed up at the
show last night.
(pause)
Yeah. I hear ya. It kinda freaked
me out though. Anyways, he wanted
to know how I was going with the
painting.
(pause)
I told him it was coming along just
fine, but he kinda got nervous and
asked if you were gonna come over
and help. So I told him yes and
that you were coming over tomorrow.
(pause)
Sorry. I just didn't want him to
start freakin out.
(pause)
No, you don't need to come over. I
actually got it pretty much under
control.
(pause)
No, really, it's cool.
(pause)
Alright, Professor, I'll see ya
later.

Jason hangs up the phone.

JASON
Shit.

Jason goes to a table and flips through an art magazine.

Sarah comes over and hugs Jason from behind.

Jason starts pulling her over the top of him.

SARAH
Jason! Stop it. Your gonna get me
in trouble.

JASON
(smiling)
Oh! Sorry about that.
Sarah uprights herself in the chair next to him.

SARAH
I only have a couple of minutes for
break.

JASON
That's cool.

SARAH
What've you been up to? Did you
have a good cry last night?

JASON
Whatever. I went and saw some
genealogy guy to check out the
crest on the back of the painting.

SARAH
And?

JASON
He said he'd call me in a couple of
days.

SARAH
Great. I'm sure the owner will be
pleased.

JASON
Mr. Starne? Yeah, I'm sure he'll
be happy.
(pause)
I had the weirdest dream last
night.

SARAH
What about?

JASON
I don't really remember...
something about an old lady...
It's like she was calling out to
me.

SARAH
Maybe it was me when I'm really
old. Even in your dreams you can't
get away from me.

Jason laughs.

JASON
You are my dream.

SARAH
Your hand's bleeding again.

JASON
Yeah, I had to put a fresh bandage
on this morning. I must've
knocked it against something while
I was sleeping. It'll be fine.

SARAH
Why not just get it stitched up?

JASON
Nah, it'll be fine.
(pause)
I've got an idea... How about I
finish up this restoration, and we
take a vacation together.

SARAH
Stop changing the subject.

JASON
I'm not. I'm gonna be done with
this restoration before you know it
and we can take off. The Professor
said this guy is gonna pay really
well for this.

SARAH
You don't know how much your gonna
get?

JASON
No. Not exactly. I think the
professor does.

SARAH
(whispering)
Jason! I'm sure it'll be okay.
You trust the professor.

JASON
Absolutely.

SARAH
Well then.

Jason cheers up.

JASON
Where would you want to go?

SARAH
How about Paris?

JASON
That would be cool. Then we could
go check out La Louvre.

SARAH
Oui.

JASON
I'm Sorry? I didn't understand
you.

SARAH
Yes you did.

JASON
Je t'adore.

SARAH
So when do you think you'll be
done.

JASON
Uh... I don't know. I haven't
thought about it.

SARAH
Well?

JASON
Couple of days.

SARAH
Really? You're not kidding?

JASON
(slightly hesitant)
Yeah, really.

SARAH
Then I'll start planning.
(pause)
Hey! My day went well.

JASON
Really? What did you do?

SARAH
My parents went out of town on
business. That means I have the
house all to myself, and I'm making
you a great dinner. How does that
sound?

Jason perks up and smiles.

JASON
Great. When can I come over?

SARAH
Say 7:00?

JASON
Ok.

SARAH
I gotta get back to work Jason.
I’ll see you later.

JASON
I love you.

Sarah kisses Jason on the cheek.

SARAH
(whispering)
I love you.

She goes back to work.

Jason leaves.

INT. JASON'S APARTMENT - DAY
Oblique shot of painting. Jason's apartment is dark and no one is there.

From the painting can be heard the faint sound of screaming.

The screaming grows a bit louder, then stops.
